Special Reminder:
Just a reminder about the Bill Porter Invitational - Coach Paul Cruz and Julian High School will be hosting the track meet this Friday. If anyone would like to volunteer to help please reach out.
Below is a little History of him if you do not know who Bill Porter is.
We would like to Honor Coach Bill Porter for his years of dedication to Julian Track and Field and Cross Country.
In High School Bill Porter was named the Outstanding Track and Field Athlete of the Southern Prep League and Held the records for the Army Navy Academy in the 660 and 880. He then went on to college at Cal Western where he held records in the 800 meters as well as the 1600 meters. Bill Ran had an 800 meter time of 1:51.6. He was the first Cal Western athlete ever to medal at the national level.
Coach Porter then competed for the Marine Corps track team before serving as a 1st Lieutenant in Vietnam as a member of 3rd Battalion, 3rd marines. With him in the Marine Corp was 1964 gold medal winner Billy Mills an Oglala Lakota Native American distance runner. They created a friendship and remain friends today.
He then competed for the San Diego Track Club in 1980 and was named AAU Outstanding Master distance runner for San Diego and Imperial Counties.
After Coach Rickansrud retired the Julian cross country and Track and Field lay dormant for many years. Bill Porter along with Buzz Tom who also served our country in the marines started Julian Cross Country in 1989 and Track and Field in 1990. Under Bill’s Coaching Julian went on to win 27 plus League Championships. Bill was awarded a legendary coaches award by CIF for his ability to Bring out the best in his athletes in sport as well as in life.
Bill Porter turned this Program into what it is today. Athletically and academically he always got the best out of his Athletes and taught them how to transfer that drive into their lives after High School.
Bill Also Coordinated the funding to turn our track from a dirt mess into an all-weather Track.
On a personal note Bill has been an inspiration and person to look up to in coaching and life. Since my years of coaching here at Julian he has helped me every step of the way and has become a good friend along the way. The humble Bill Porter rarely talks about his accomplishments in life but when he does my Jaw drops. Here is a man who blacksmith by trade and runner by heart has accomplished so many things in this life all while touching so many people along the way . He has filled them with lifelong takeaways of drive, kindness, determination, and heart and the ability to use it in all areas of sport and most importantly in life.
Thank you Coach Bill Porter for all you have done for Julian High School Cross Country and Track and Field through the years.
We truly would not be here today if it was not for your dedication to us all. This meet is dedicated to you as the second annual Bill Porter Track and Field Invitational.
